Dear Friends,

A few days ago, we sat together, reading and meditating upon today’s Gospel - - the Marriage Feast at Cana. Here are our thoughts:

The young man Jesus delighted in celebrating joyous events with family and friends. Jesus and His Mother Mary were invited to the wedding of a man and a woman of 2,000 years ago. Twenty-eight years ago, we invited Jesus and Mary to be with us at our wedding, here at St. Robert’s. They came and are still with us.

In the midst of jubilation, the wine jugs emptied. Presumably, Jesus did not notice; but Mary did. We see her coming up to Jesus, saying: "They have no wine." Her concern is evident. She didn’t want the couple’s joy to turn to embarrassment. Mary opened her heart to their needs and brought them to Jesus.

During our life together, there have been days when the first wine seemed to be running short. At times we felt overwhelmed by illnesses, responsibilities and concern for those we love. Then it was that we came to Mary. In her compassionate love, she has gone to Jesus for us, just as she did for this couple.

Jesus’ reply may sound uncaring: "Woman, how does your concern affect Me? My hour has not yet come." Perhaps Jesus didn’t feel ready to take that first step to Calvary. Mary, knowing Him better than anyone, was confident that He would refuse her nothing. She said to the servers: "Do whatever he tells you." They obeyed Jesus and He turned ordinary water into the best of wine. We have discovered that when we discern and do God’s Will, Jesus performs miracles in our lives as well. The first wine of our married life together was good - - - This well-aged wine of which we now drink is mellower and richer. Jesus has shown us how commonplace His miracles are in our walk with Him. His glory has been revealed to us; we believe in Him.

AS A PARISH COMMUNITY, WE PRAY.....

The Jubilee Year has come to a close . . . The process of RENEW 2000 has finished . . . Christmas festivities are behind us. It seems like a good time to take a breather—a rest. Get away to a quiet place for a while. But for what purpose? To return to frantic busy-ness and constant activity? The same old rat race?! No way! I invite you to enter the quiet, listen to the voice of the Spirit in your heart, and DISCERN what’s next. Where is God calling you and me to prune back things in our lives, and where is God calling us to step up to the plate? We all have to do this.

I’ll be honest. I’m hoping the Holy Spirit will call several more of us in this parish to leadership and ministry. I admit it—I’m biased and have a self-interest in this. But I’ll also tell you that there is a real growing need at St. Robert’s for new faces to serve in liturgical ministries—choirs, eucharistic ministry, lectoring, serving, ushering and greeting—as well as in Children’s Liturgy, Religious Education, Sacramental Preparation, etc. Listen to the voice in your heart. Discern carefully. Talk to a trusted friend or staff member about what’s next. - P. K.
