Dear Parishioners, Well, the new year is off and running! Whether or not we have children in school, things seem to revolve around a school schedule, don’t they? It’s great to hear the sound of young voices filling the air, to see the new batch of kindergarteners, and to marvel at the inches everyone else has grown over the summer! The festival is just around the corner and, with it, the beginning of our 50th anniversary year as a parish. Who knows what blessings God has in mind for us this year? On Tuesday of this week, we mark the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. No doubt, the media will be filled with photos and commentary. If your schedule allows, you might want to come to the 6:30 am or 8:30 am Mass that day. Or you might want to spend some time with your household or alone praying for all who died that day. We might include the people in so many countries who live with the daily fear of death from terrorism, war or famine. Lest we become disheartened by sadness, we need to pray also for the thousands of people who are working to bring compassion through religious groups like Catholic Relief Services and Bread for the World and humanitarian groups like Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam. God has not forgotten us and the Spirit is still at work through many good and generous people. If you have a bit of time this week, you can help bring our Christian values to two pieces of pending legislation. 7.7% of children were without health insurance in 2004; 8.7% were without it in 2006. SCHIP, the State Children’s Health Insurance program will cover all eligible children for $50 billion over the next five years. The Religious Working Group, which includes the Catholic Rural Life Conference, recommends that the 2007 Farm Bill be changed to ensure all Americans an adequate, nutritious diet through school lunches and a better funded food stamps program; to strengthen rural communities by support for small farmers instead of corporations; to improve international food aid in ways that encourage local production of crops instead of “dumping” our surplus which impoverishes local farmers. You can contact our legislators through www.networklobby.org Peace and every blessing as we begin this new year of faithful service to the Lord, each other and our world-wide neighbors. S. Sheral |
