Dear Parishioners,

I hope that each and every one of you had a very happy Thanksgiving. This week we begin a new Advent season. We are asked by Jesus to be on watch. We tend to relegate this command to simply keeping guard. Guarding our minds and bodies against sin, against over-indulgence and guarding our families against harm. However this is only one part of the picture. Our Catholic faith tells us that we cannot live this Christian life solely by our own power-by our own watchfulness. We need the Grace of God if we want to become like Christ.

When the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis collapsed as people were heading home from work, the car Peter Hausmann was driving slid into the Mississippi River. Unlike the people in today’s Gospel who lived unaware before the fold. Peter was ready to act as a generous Christian in this tragic moment. Peter escaped his car, but rescuers found him near another car where a piece of concrete fell on him as he tried to free a young Somali mother with a two year old in her backseat. Death caught Peter Hausmann in an act of love, typical of how he lived, a friend testified. So as we enter into this watchful season of Advent, we all hope to act as generous Christians toward our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

God Bless,
Deacon John Meyer

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR THE HOMEBOUND

Once again we begin our Advent preparations for the coming of Jesus. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of our Christmas shopping, let us remember our sisters and brothers who are confined to their homes or care facilities due to illness or declining years. There are baskets on the altar steps in which you may place your unwrapped gifts of: slippers, white knee socks, lap robes, sweaters, nightgowns, pajamas or a card or note letting them know we care. We can bring a smile to their faces and warmth to their hearts.

If you can prepare a favorite cookie, snack or lunch item for 10 to 12 people, please drop it off at the Children's Chapel, in the back of Church, by 9 a.m. on December 12th. Please pack the items in a non-returnable container. Frozen items are ok!

We’ve received our families from our own St. Vincent de Paul Society as well as Catholic Worker House in Redwood City, Child and Family Services of San Mateo County, and again this year we’ve gotten some families from our adopted parish in Mississippi.

If you have the means to help, look for the tree after Masses the weekends of Dec.1st & 2nd and 8th & 9th. We’ll need the gifts turned in by the weekend of Dec. 15th and 16th for distribution.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. If you have any questions, give one of us a call: Rob and Cathy Aveson, John and Eileen Grealish or John and Nancy Marty.

CAROLING! CAROLING! HERE WE GO!

Yes, it’s that time of year. It’s time for the choir’s annual caroling trip to Emmanuel Convalescent Hospital to give a little holiday cheer to those who may not get it any other way. This is the fifth year that we have been invited to sing.

We are going to gather on Sun., Dec. 16th, at 2:00 PMto pass out the music. We will then caravan to the hospital to sing for about 45 minutes to an hour. We will plan to arrive there at 3:00 PM. As we did last year, we are inviting those of you who can give about 2 hours of your time and voice to join us. There will be familiar carols, so that everyone can feel comfortable singing. All will be welcome, and it will give you another chance to sing Christmas carols besides Christmas Eve.

The healing power of music is tremendous and the giving of your time can be an important way of showing your faith. The smiles and tears from some of the elderly at the hospital last year made our short time with them a moving experience.

Following our caroling trip, we will gather for a wassail party at the home of one of our choir members. No need to bring anything; the choir will supply some food and, of course, the spiced cider!

Here is something we can do during the holiday season that can make a difference in the lives of some of our elderly. It may seem like the least that we can do, but it may be the most that we can do for those in need. I hope that many of you can join us for an afternoon of caroling.

Kevin Imbimbo

Advent is Here!
I don’t know about you, but Advent is my favorite season of the Church year. The readings from Isaiah are always wonderful, assuring the people of his time, the latter half of the 8th century before Christ, that there will be a future of peace. His times, like our own, were wracked with violence, yet Isaiah’s faith in God’s protection is strong. Though Isaiah’s words predict a king from David’s descendents, we Christians hear in his words a reference to Jesus whose reign brings about the reconciliation described here. The lion and the calf, the wolf and the lamb, the leopard and the kid, natural enemies at peace with one another!

We find it difficult to believe that reconciliation can happen, don’t we? Don’t we often hear or find ourselves saying about countries or individuals, “They’ve fought like this forever. It will never be settled.” And yet… we have seen a glimpse of this miraculous reconciliation in our time. South Africans white and black peacefully voted for the first time in 1994, a transition from apartheid which many predicted would only be accomplished with great bloodshed and chaos. Northern Ireland is finally at peace with the last holdout group disarming earlier this year. And seemingly, a movement towards justice and freedom in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has begun.

If countries and governments can do it, why is it so difficult for us as individuals? Desmond Tutu’s book, No Future Without Forgiveness gives the details of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s work in South Africa. He speaks of the importance of the person who has hurt or abused someone acknowledging responsibility and offering an apology. If he or she doesn’t do that, it is more difficult to forgive, but not impossible. If the offense has been serious, forgiveness will probably be a process into which God’s love for us invites us. We’ll need to grow toward the example of Jesus who forgave those nailing him to the cross.

One way to ward off the incessant consumer push of the season is to make your household an Advent wreath. If you want to make one, all you need is a round plate, 3 purple candles, 1 pink, and evergreens. You’ll want to light the candles clockwise, one each week, so that the pink one is lit on the third Sunday of Advent. The circular wreath and the evergreens are reminders of the endlessness of God’s love for us and the candles for Jesus, the light of the world. Check the Catholic San Francisco for the prayer for each week’s lighting of the wreath. If you have questions, please see me or give me a call. Happy Advent!

Peace, S. Sheral
