PARISH BULLETIN

Second Sunday of Easter

Hello,
Visitors and People of St. Roberts Community,

The Gospel reading this week reads in part:

Have you come to believe cause you have seen me? John 20:19-31

Later on it reads:

And blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.

Reflecting on the resurrection at Easter and the Gospel reading this week, I thought about my 56 years on this earth and where I am today.

I guess you might say I have had my own “resurrection” of sorts. It was the “disco era” of the 70’s and there I was 24, newly divorced, living in L.A. and mother to 2 young children. It was as if I was a kid myself, in a candy store. I had all these new friends just like me who wanted to experience all the strange and wonderful things that the world was bringing our way.

At times, it was scary but we did have plenty of great times and we always had each other. It reached a point however, where I realized enough was enough and it was then that I received the grace of wisdom to stop the madness. I know now it was the hand of God, sight unseen, that saved me from possibly losing my children at some point if I had continued down the path I was taking. I am so grateful for His hand in “resurrecting” me from such a horrible fate and giving me the grace of wisdom to turn my life around.

Today, I am still very good friends with Donna, one of the ladies I met 32 years ago. Our lives have been touched by God and we continue to be touched by Him day after day, sight unseen.

May God continue to give you Grace, sight unseen.
Kathy Hanley

As a Parish Community on this Divine Mercy Sunday

We pray…..for our Church. God has gifted us with His Holy Spirit. May we grow stronger in our faith and be of one heart and one mind as we witness to the resurrection of Jesus.

Happy Easter, Everyone!

Easter is a day of joy for us because through his resurrection, Jesus took the past of the apostles - as he does ours - and forgave the worst of it and saved the best of it. He conquered the future by making death a door to be opened instead of a dead end. Most happily of all, he gave each of us his Presence, his Spirit, to be the Way through which we live toward that future which “eye hath not seen nor ear heard.” Elizabeth Meluch, OCD in People’s Companion to the Breviary, p. 197

If you were one of the many parishioners who were able to participate in the liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, you’ll understand deeply what this Carmelite is expressing. During the Good Friday stations, a parishioner shared her experience of a judge who graciously declared all her drunk driving fines paid without her having paid a penny. After the Vigil service, I was having tea with our Presentation sisters when S. Ita declared, “That’s what Jesus did! He paid our fines!” And she’s right.

So we don’t have to go around feeling guilty any more. (If we’ve done something seriously wrong, we have the Sacrament of Penance through which we hear the priest actually say that through the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus our sins are forgiven.) And if we believe that we are loved enough that He would die for us, then surely that conviction must lead us to forgive others and, as Fr. Marini said, to comfort and heal those many members of Christ’s body who are still suffering. The energy wasted on guilt can be directed at washing the feet of those who need our care and concern.

If you haven’t felt the joy of Easter yet due to your own illness or that of a loved one or serious personal difficulties, be at peace. Our interior “seasons” don’t always coincide with the Church’s liturgical seasons. Trust that God is with you, wherever you are in your own spiritual journey. The Church gives us 50 days to celebrate the mysteries of the Triduum since it takes us that long to grasp how wonderful they are! Your time will come.

Peace, S. Sheral

Statement from Our Archbishop

Archbishop George Niederauer has called on us to pray today, Divine Mercy Sunday, and in the coming weeks for just and humane immigration legislation and to contact our legislators. The bishops of the United States and Mexico in communion with John Paul II in his 1995 World Migration Day message have said: “It is the task of the various dioceses to actively ensure that these people [undocumented immigrants] who are obliged to live outside the safety net of civil society may find a sense of brotherhood in the Christian community. Solidarity means taking responsibility for those in trouble.” (Strangers No Longer, p. 47) Immigration reform, Archbishop Niederauer states, needs to respect family unity and reunification; create effective opportunities for undocumented immigrants to become citizens; allow for secure borders with humane enforcement; and honor the important work that is done by the immigrant community in our society.
