PARISH BULLETIN
April 30, 2006
Third Sunday of Easter

Dear Parishioners,

By the time you read this bulletin letter we will have celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. We congratulate our 74 candidates on taking this next step in their journey of Faith. Congratulations and thank you to their parents, sponsors, who for two years have walked the journey with them. A special thank you to our Confirmation co-coordinator Joanne Bartolltti and the Confirmation Team:

Deacon John Meyer, Marci Elmore, Tate Elmore, Megan Gilfillan, Peggy Hart,
Christina Ivancich, Cecilia Landholt, Jake Landholt, Diana Landin,
Ben Baldonado, Bailey Rodriguez, and Terry Smerdel.

Their commitment and generous service greatly enhanced the quality of the program. I know that the Candidates enjoyed classes and conversations with these dedicated teachers. We hope that these teachers will continue to share their knowledge, wisdom and faith with the Candidates of the future.

The celebration was on Friday evening, April 28th. We pray God’s continued blessings on the Candidates, their parents and sponsors. May they walk with the Spirit as they further mature and grow into young adults.

Blessings and gratitude
Sister Mary

As a Parish Community we pray…..for our young people who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday evening, for their sponsors, parents and teachers. May their lives show that Christ lives within our midst.

WE CONGRATULATE THE NEWLY MARRIED

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

This week we pray for:
William Dill

Our sincere sympathy to the family of
Msgr. Bernard J. Moran
who died recently.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

On Saturday, May 6th, and on each First Saturday of every month, we have the privilege of worshiping Jesus in His Blessed Sacrament. Jesus has given His life for us and has promised that He will always be with us. Come and spend a little quiet time with Him in Mary’s Chapel, following the 8:30 am Mass. Adoration will end at 10 am with Benediction.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION COUPLES NEEDED

If you would like to work with young couples of the parish preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony, and if you have been married for at least 10 years, and ideally if you have children, we would like you to consider becoming part of our parish Marriage Preparation Program. The Archdiocese is offering a one-day training program on Saturday, May 6th. Upon completion of that training day, we will team you up with an existing couple until you are comfortable to work alone. Please contact Fr. Bruce if you have additional questions. We really need and appreciate the help of all those involved in this ministry

THE CROWNING OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER

Next Sunday, May 7th at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, the children of our parish will honor Our Blessed Mother by presenting her with a crown of flowers. Children are encouraged to bring fresh flowers and come early to participate in the opening procession.

THE PARENTS' RIGHT TO KNOW AND CHILD PROTECTION INITIATIVE

The California Catholic Conference encourages Catholics to support the signature gathering effort for a ballot imitative that would require notification of a parent or guardian by a physician before an abortion is performed on an unemancipated minor. We have access to The Parents’ Right to Know and Child Protection Initiative. Signatures need to be collected by May 10th. Signatures cannot be collected in church but if you call the rectory at 589-2800 we will be able to get you a petition to sign or we can give you one to collect signatures yourself.

AIDS LUNCH
May 10th

We are scheduled for the 2nd Wednesday of each month. If you can prepare a favorite cookie, snack or lunch item for 10 to 12 people, please drop it off at the Children's Chapel, in the back of Church, by 9 a.m. on May 10th. Please pack the items in a non-returnable container. Frozen items are ok!

BEEN AWAY A WHILE?

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to Mass and you’d like to get reconnected with the faith of your childhood, please feel free to contact any member of the parish staff. You can reach us by phone or e-mail; we’ll be happy to help you.

Saint Roberts Church Library

Spiritual Reading will be available at St. Robert’s after the Masses on Sundays. Please take a few minutes either before or after Mass and check out a book or two that interest you. You may keep the books until you have them read. We have some books on the Library cart but we have many more in the Library/Reconciliation room.

Enjoy Reading

SPIRITUAL BOUQUET FOR MOTHER'S DAY
May 14th

As a spiritual gift to your mother, you will find cards in the vestibule of the church to have her remembered in the Holy Sacrament of the Mass offered at St. Roberts in observance of Mother’s Day, May 14th.

CHURCH HISTORY

The Church History class is continuing Tuesday mornings at 9:15 in Mary's Chapel and Tuesday evenings at 7 pm in the Convent Chapel. We're learning about the Church in the Middle Ages and you're welcome to join us even if you missed the first section. S. Sheral

THE CHALLENGE OF OUR FAITH

“Those who have more can make choices to use less, to share more, and to advocate for greater justice so that all people have the resources to provide for themselves and their families…For all to have a place at the table, some of us may have to take a smaller place at the table.” U.S. Catholic Bishops A Place at the Table, #19, 2002

Easter Continues!
The Church gives us 50 days to absorb this great mystery of our redemption, Christ’s life, death and resurrection. We need all these weeks because it is almost beyond fathoming. The readings present to us the appearances of Jesus and the responses of those who experience him. Peter denies Jesus when a servant girl who has no power to do him harm meets him in the courtyard and asks if he was with Jesus. Peter who once ran away with the others is now filled with the Spirit, heals in Jesus’ name and proclaims him publicly. In fact, shortly after this piece from the Acts, Peter will be arrested and again speaks out boldly.

Though it’s not in our tradition as American Catholics, passages like this should lead us to ask ourselves: Have I ever spoken about my faith, publicly or just one-on-one? Coming out of an early American history of persecution and suspicion, such reticence was understandable in the past, but no longer. The fascination with the DaVinci Code and the Gospel of Judas are indications that many people are on some sort of spiritual quest. Most of us don’t appreciate the approach of the more fundamentalist groups and I’m not proposing that we go door to door. But, I wonder, are we aware enough to notice the person who wishes we’d talk about our faith? Would it ever occur to us that a coworker or neighbor or friend might wonder why we come to Mass on Sundays or why we’re more generous with our time, energy or finances than others he or she knows? What if we tried to be more sensitive this coming week to pick up an openness and then pray that the Spirit will guide us? “Easter is God’s class action suit against sin and death.“ (James A. Forbes, “The Living Pulpit,” April /May, 2005, p. 45.)

Peace, S. Sheral

Justice and Peace Committee
The parish survey taken last fall asked you to indicate if you were interested in being part of a parish Justice and Peace Committee. Several people commented that they couldn’t make a commitment because they didn’t know what the group was about. We don’t know exactly what the group will be about either, but a group of parishioners and I are going to meet Wednesday, May 17 at 7 pm in the Mahoney Room to discuss how best to get input from the entire parish about which issues of concern you would like us to focus on. It is our hope that the whole parish will help determine what direction the parish Justice and Peace Committee should take. If you would like to be part of this effort, please e-mail me at sistersheral@saintroberts.org or call me at 589-2800 and let me know of your interest. Thank you.
