PARISH BULLETIN
June 25, 2006
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

There was a quietness for one week from June 12th until June 16th in the school building since we were between the regular school year and summer school. As I reflected on the previous school year, a connection arose between this week’s gospel reading and the experiences of the year.

Throughout the year, children and families experience different crisis in their lives, such as, illness, death, difficulties within a marriage or interpersonal relationships. It is during this time that we sometimes ask, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?” In the gospel Jesus reminds us that his presence can bring peace to our hearts even in the storms of life if we trust him at all times and in all circumstances. I remember a saying that my grandmother told me when I was young, “If God brings you to something, He is always there to lead you through it.”

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.

Sincerely,
Yvonne Olcomendy

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

We hear in today’s Gospel about a time when Jesus was sleeping in the boat. A violent storm came up. His friends were frightened, thinking they were perishing. Jesus woke up and rebuked the sea and wind, saying: “Quiet, Be still!” Suddenly there was a great calm. At times we too feel overwhelmed by life storms that batter us from every sides. Jesus invites us also to: “Be still!” and call upon Him. He will calm our minds and hearts. We have the opportunity to experience this peace on Saturday, July 1st, following the 8:30 am Mass and on every First Saturday of every month, as we celebrate Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Benediction and closing will take place at 10:00 am.

As a Parish Community we pray…..for those we love who are ill, worried or afraid. As they cry out to the Lord in their distress, may He rescue them.

Our sincere sympathy to the family of
Sal Lucchese
who died recently.

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

My Weekend Reflection
Having spent most of the weekend in bed with a cold, I remembered anew how difficult it is to do anything when you don’t feel well. I had every intention of praying some and catching up with my reading, but did neither. It made me feel for those who are chronically ill or who have disabilities which leave them with no energy for anything.

Saturday morning, Sr. Patricia, Barbara Rudometkin and I met with a wonderful group of people who came together to talk about their experience of caregiving. As our population ages with better nutrition and better health care available for those of us who can afford it, more and more of us will have the experience either of being cared for or of caring for someone close to us. The support of others in the same boat is essential. The next gathering of this group is scheduled for Saturday, September 30 from 8:30 am to 1 pm in the convent chapel. Everyone is welcome. In preparing for Saturday’s gathering, I came across a great resource from San Mateo County Aging and Adult Services. The TIES line, 1-800-675-TIES is staffed 24 hours a day with a social worker ready to provide information, advice and 24 hour emergency response. You can also access all the county services for the aging at www.smhealth.org/aas.

This past week, California lawmakers have been debating a “death with dignity” bill legalizing assisted suicide, modeled on the one in effect in Oregon. Months ago, our bishops came out against this bill, AB651, but it is finally making its way through the legislative process. Unfortunately, there seems to be general approval of the concept of allowing terminally ill people to receive a lethal prescription to hasten their deaths. The bill, authored by members of the Assembly, is actually being considered in the Senate and may be voted upon Tuesday. You could contact State Senator Jackie Speier at www.sen.ca.gov/speier or by calling her at her Capitol office at 916-651-4008 or by fax at 916-327-2186.

Let us pray for one another during these lovely summer weeks.

Peace, S. Sheral
