PARISH BULLETIN
September 24, 2006
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Taking a child, He placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” Mark 9:37

Dear Parishioners;

This Sunday’s Gospel is very fitting as we celebrate our Parish Festival. We all know that the Festival weekend is the favorite (parish) weekend of the year of all children and of those with the heart of a child. It is that time of year when all adults and children alike are encouraged to enjoy the fun and festivities as a new parish family. It is a time to renew acquaintances and make new friends. It is a time to celebrate life, friendships good health and the freedom to gather, to visit, and to play as one community.

Let’s give thanks to God for this great privilege that is ours. This festival time is the result of many hours of dedication, planning and hard work. May God bless abundantly all those who worked so hard to make this a magical time for the little ones. Remember the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel, “Whoever receives one child in my name, receives me.”

Sister Patricia

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Saturday, October 7th, is the First Saturday of the month—the day upon which we have the privilege of celebrating Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. In this world of unrest, violence and war, the most powerful weapon we have is prayer and trust in God’s mercy. Please come to adore Jesus, to thank Him for all He has given us and to pray for peace. Adoration follows the 8:30 am Mass and continues until Benediction at 10 am.

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

CONSOLATION MINISTRY
September 30th

Saint Robert’s Grief Support Group will hold their first fall meeting on September 30th in the Convent Chapel from 3-4:15 p.m. (before the 4:30 p.m. Mass). Anyone who is suffering from the loss of a loved one-spouse, sibling, child, parent, friend or relative is invited to come and pray, share, comfort and be comforted. You are invited to bring a companion for support and strength. God bless and comfort you in your sorrow. Call Sister Patricia 589-104 or any of the Consolation Ministry Committee.

Saint Roberts Church Library

Spiritual Reading will be available at St. Robert’s after the Masses on Sundays. Please take a few minutes either before or after Mass and check out a book or two that interest you. You may keep the books until you have them read. We have some books on the Library cart but we have many more in the Library/Reconciliation room.

Enjoy Reading

One of the great blessings of ministering in this parish is the generosity of so many of you, expressed in varied ways. Fr. Bruce mentioned in his homily last week that St. Robert’s has given $35,000 to the victims of Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. What a wonderful indication that we really are putting our faith into action, as the letter of Saint James last week urged us! Another indication of our trying to live out our faith is the establishment of our Social Concerns group. The first phase of our work is having conversations with at least 100 of you to find out what you feel we should focus on this first year. Since you are people of great faith and compassion, we trust that the Spirit of God will be speaking through you and that out of these conversations, one local concern and one global concern will emerge. Someone of the group may be calling you these next few weeks or you can call any of us and let us know you’d like to have some input into the direction we take. Members of the group are: Hilda Barradas, Esperanza Halili, Kerry Hansell, Rose Jardin, Tracey Jones, Danielle Katches, Yvette Kinchen, Josie Mercado, and myself. We look forward to welcoming anyone else who’d like to join the group.

The Archdiocese of San Francisco is one of several Catholic institutions sponsoring the Point 7 Now conference on Friday and Saturday, October 27 and 28, at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The title refers to the promise made by the developed nations to give .7% of their gross national product toward the needs of the developing nations. In addition to members of the Social Concerns group, we have room for a few more people to participate each day. If you are interested or would like more information, please call me at 589-2800. Peace, S. Sheral

Sessions on Vatican II
We are studying the Council document on the Sacred Liturgy and the tremendous influence it has on our celebration of the sacraments. If you’d like to join us, just come any Tuesday to Mary’s Chapel at 9:15 am or to the Convent Chapel at 7 pm. You’re most welcome.

Empowering the Caregiver
If you are involved in caregiving for anyone in any capacity, you are cordially invited to this day of prayer and sharing of the challenges and blessings of caregiving. It takes place in the convent chapel, 349 Oak Ave. next Saturday, September the 30th , from 8:30 am to 1 pm, closing with lunch. Please call Sr. Patricia at 589-0104 or Sr. Sheral at 589-2800, so we’ll have the appropriate number of materials available.

The Pope on Torture
“The thought of Jesus being stripped, beaten and derided until his final agony on the cross should always prompt a Christian to protest against similar treatment of their fellow beings. Of their own accord, disciples of Christ will reject torture, which nothing can justify, which causes humiliation and suffering to the victim and degrades the tormentor.” Pope John Paul II in Pax Christi Newsletter, March 2006

Women’s Retreat
All women of the parish are invited to our annual women’s retreat, on November 18 at Mercy Center from 8:30 am til 3 pm. Please mark your calendar now, so you can give yourself the gift of this day of renewal and refreshment. You deserve it!
