PARISH BULLETIN
October 1, 2006
26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners

One of the most frequently spoken words in Scripture is thanks or thanksgiving. It is sung throughout the Psalms. Saint Paul’s letters echo the theme. The words and actions of Jesus reflect its very nature.

We have so much to be thankful for in our lives. When one sees the conditions in which people live around the world we must be grateful for what we have. And yet at times we feel we have so little. In visiting Cambodia this past summer I witnessed first hand how little people have and how much I have in comparison. The average per capital income in Cambodia is $350.00 per year. As a high school senior in 1966 I was making more than that in a month!

These past few weeks we have been cleaning out my mom’s house. She had so much stuff. We are finding old cards we made for her in school, pictures of our family vacations, candles made by her grandchildren, knick knacks given as gifts. These all had special memories for her. They were important connections to the lives of our family.

These past few weeks have also been a hectic time for our parish family as well. The pre-festival preparation, the set up, the festival weekend itself are now all behind us. By 10:00 p.m. last Sunday night all the booths were dismantled, the stage and backdrop were stored in the shed. What was left of our festival could be found in two large garbage bins and two recycling bins. What took two weeks to prepare was stored away in four hours!

The festival weekend doesn’t just happen. The many meetings, the hours of phone calls, the days spent painting, wiring and building are gifts which hundreds of dedicated people gave to make this weekend happen. I give thanks to God for these many people who gave of themselves to make the festival such a great success.

Saint Robert’s can be distinguished from so many parishes by the level of dedication and involvement which people share. We all have been given gifts we use to support one another, to better our community and to enrich our lives.

On behalf of the entire parish,
THANK YOU . . . THANK YOU . . . THANK YOU

Father Bruce

As a Parish Community on this Respect Life Sunday, we pray...that we continue to faithfully and courageously witness to the sacredness of life from the first moment of conception until natural death.

Our sincere sympathy to the families of
MaryAnn Roby and Attilio Segali
who died recently.

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

THIS WEEK WE PRAY FOR:
Mary Ann Snyder

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

On Saturday, October 7th, following the 8:30 am Mass and on every First Saturday of each month, closing with Benediction at 10 am, we have the privilege of adoring Jesus in His Blessed Sacrament. Spending time with Jesus in silent prayer can bring about an end to terrorism, violence and war. In the Presence of the source of Love and Mercy, we will receive the peace that only Jesus can give.

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY

Today, in parishes throughout the United States, Catholics are celebrating Life from the first moment of conception till the last breath is sighed. Our faith calls us to open our hearts to hear God’s Word and to act upon it. Faith is God’s gift—so also is Life! Human life deserves respect. Let us affirm the goodness of God’s creation by valuing the unborn, providing for the poor, rooting out the causes of violence and war and protecting the elderly and infirm. The RED ROSE imprinted upon our Pro-Life banner hanging in our Church symbolizes the sanctity of life at all its stages. May it help raise our consciousness about the wonder and awesomeness of all human life.

If someone you know is experiencing a difficult or unexpected pregnancy, there is a sheet with names, addresses and phone numbers of various resources available in the pamphlet rack at the main entrance of the Church. Help spread the word that a pregnant girl or woman does not have to face the challenges that pregnancy brings alone.

ANNUAL APPEAL

Thank you, Festival Workers and Goers!

I know that many thanks have been given to all whose “blood, sweat and tears,” not to mention nearly sleepless nights, went into making our parish festival a wonderful, exciting, delicious occasion! Expressing that we are a community of believers is something we do every time we gather for the Eucharist and building that community outside of the Mass is essential. If we don’t share lumpia, steak sandwiches, garlic fries, and drinks, and don’t share our stories, how can we be a community? They are connected: our everyday life and our spiritual life. Many thanks to all of you who helped that happen!

Our Challenge as Catholics

This month is traditionally the time when we focus on Respect Life issues. From abortion to the war in Iraq, we are asked to reflect on how we respect the dignity of persons from the moment of conception to natural death. As Catholics, we acknowledge that all people share a common Father; therefore, our concerns cannot be narrow ones, but must be global ones. We may be tempted to choose one aspect or another to focus upon but, as Catholics, we are faced with the difficult challenge of looking at all the life issues: embryonic stem cell research; health care, just wages, and equitable education; capital punishment; how we view those born with physical or mental difficulties; our responsibilities to our children and grandchildren. How do we want our government to interact with the leaders of the rest of the world? How do we judge the effects of globalization? Does my job help the human family in some way or hurt the environment we all, ultimately, share? How much do our religious beliefs inform our political beliefs? We celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, patron of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, on Wednesday. A little-known fact about his life is that in the midst of one of the crusades, when Moslems and Christians were brutally killing each other, he visited the Sultan Al-Malik with words of peace. Perhaps, Francis can intercede for us to help us treasure each person as well as the creation God has given us. Peace, S. Sheral

To Choose Life

“To choose life involves rejecting every form of violence: the violence of poverty and hunger, which afflicts so many human beings; the violence of armed conflict; the violence of criminal trafficking in drugs and arms; the violence of mindless damage to the natural environment. In every circumstance, the right to life must be promoted and safeguarded with appropriate legal and political guarantees, for no offense against the right to life, against the dignity of any single person, is ever unimportant. Rather, we must recognize Christ in the poorest and the most marginalized, those whom the Eucharist –which is communion in the body and blood of Christ given up for us – commits us to serve. As the parable of the rich man, who will remain forever without a name, and the poor man called Lazarus clearly shows, in the stark contrast between the insensitive rich man and the poor in need of everything, God is on the latter’s side. We, too, must be on his side.” Pope John Paul II, 1999 World Peace Day Address
