THE MUSIC IN LENT

There is a great tradition of Lenten music from the major composers in music history. The most obvious examples are the St. John and St. Matthew Passions of J. S. Bach. These oratorios are based the Gospel accounts of the death and resurrection of Jesus. There is a wealth of music from these works alone, not to mention the many hymns and choral works that have been written about the Passion. It is obvious that the importance of these events is not lost on our major composers. There can be no resurrection without the crucifixion.

The liturgies in Lent will have a reflective mood, and this includes the music. The hymns that we sing will not be as upbeat and joyous sounding as those of other seasons. It is hard to write a song about the suffering of Christ, our own experience of dying and rising and make it sound happy. Even the opening of Mass is meant to set the mood with the ringing chime and our chanted litany. Music that is more sedate can allow for this spirit of reflection, whether it is organ music, choral music or hymns.

The hymns we have chosen reflect the themes of Lent, dealing with repentance, renewal and change of heart. “Rend your hearts, turn back your lives to Me,” from the hymn “Led by the Spirit” and the “Change Our Hearts” hymn itself are examples of this. The lyrics of “Beyond the Days” sum up the sentiment of Lent: “Beyond the days of hope and mystery we see a light of faith renewed, and in our longing we thirst for guidance to walk with you day by day.” Let us look for the light of renewed faith, thirst for guidance and walk with God day by day.

With this in mind, I would like to invite you to a Lenten Tenebrae Service. This is literally a service of darkness. The music is powerful and most beautiful, and chronicles, through readings and music, Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem through his crucifixion. St. Robert’s, along with several other churches, will present this service on Palm Sunday, April 1st at 3 p.m. I urge you to come and invite others who may not be regular attendees. This service, as well as the liturgies of Holy Week, is a powerful expression of our faith.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Saturday, March 3rd

On Saturday, March 3rd, as on every First Saturday of each month following the 8:30 am Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held in our Church. A satisfying way to journey through Lent is to spend some time before Jesus in the Eucharist. We can share our thoughts, feelings, hope and dreams with Him. If we listen closely, He will speak to our hearts. Adoration closes with Benediction at 10:00 am.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND SOUP SUPPERS

All are invited to the Church for Stations at 6:00 pm each Friday during Lent. After this time of reflection and prayer, we will go to Hennessy Hall to share a sacrificial meal of soup. salad, bread and fruit. We ask that you give what you would have spent on your Friday dinner to our St. Vincent de Paul Society. They will use it to provide food to our sisters and brothers in need. There will be a basket for your donation on the serving table. We come together for:

Prayer—Stations of the Cross
Fasting and Abstinence—a light meal
Almsgiving—a donation to St. Vincent de Paul

On Friday, March 2nd, Sister Sheral’s group will lead the Stations and the Grownups will host the supper.

LENT
The Season of Giving

The Children’s Liturgy Team is kindly requesting donations of non-perishable food items for San Bruno Catholic Worker House during the season of Lent. Baskets will be placed in both Little and Middle Church and any donations you and your child would like to make may be placed there. Children may also bring them to Little and Middle Church on Sundays as part of our Lenten season of giving. We thank you most sincerely for helping us to remember those who are truly in need our help.

A LENTEN TENEBRAE SERVICE

The Journey to the Cross
Palm Sunday
April 1st at 3 p.m.
St. Roberts Church
Kevin Imbimbo-Conductor
Jim Dahlstrom-Accompanist
Choristers from several Peninsula Churches

Join us for a service of darkness that takes us from Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem to his crucifixion. This service of word and music sets the mood for the most significant week for the Liturgical Year, and helps to prepare us for the Easter celebration ahead. A reception will follow in the vestibule.

Lent Is Here!
The holy, challenging season of Lent has arrived. As the letter from Kevin Imbimbo, our music director, has indicated everything during the liturgies will be geared towards helping us to open ourselves to God’s power to change us. If you haven’t done so yet, you might want to ask the Holy Spirit to let you know what aspect of your life needs changing. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the traditional practices that will help us get our lives back into balance.

Regular prayer – even 15 minutes a day – will stop us in our tracks and help us realize that our very life is God’s gift. The readings for each day’s Mass are wonderful and are printed in the bulletin for you to look up in your own bible. You can find an online Lenten retreat at www.goodgroundpress.com or just Google Lenten online retreats for 7 pages worth!

Fasting from food is very minimal according to the Archdiocesan directives. Fasting is meant to help us feel in our stomachs the hunger for God which we may have quieted by the many things which surround us or the hectic pace of life we have gotten used to; it can also be an act of solidarity with the starving. We can also fast from criticism or from prejudice towards a certain group or from the arrogance of an attitude which assumes that my way is always the best way.

Almsgiving means sharing of our substance, not just our excess. The Vatican II document, “The Church in the Modern World” refers to the early Fathers of the Church who command us, “Feed the person dying of hunger, because if you have not fed him, you have killed him.” Can we deprive ourselves (or our families with their consent) of something we are used to, so that we can give the savings to Catholic Worker or Bread for the World or the Catholic Relief Service collection March 17 and 18? May the Holy Spirit inspire us with practices that will change our hearts and help to change our world!

Peace,
S. Sheral
