PARISH BULLETIN |
Dear Parishioners,
There is a part of John’s gospel that makes me cringe. This week we read, “Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” How many times have I seen the elderly or bedridden in a situation where they no longer have control over their life? This is scary for me as I see where one day I might be in that situation. I guess this is the hard part of growing older. Yet this is what Jesus predicts for Peter. This is what I see in many families. I guess Jesus is trying to teach us that we must have faith in God to care for us. We begin life in the care of our parents and families. We grow and become independent. We share a love and talents with others. And than we need to recognize again that as we grow older we begin to lose that independence we tried so hard to attain. We are now ministers of God’s love to one another. One day we will have to allow God through others to minister to us. For some of us this will not be an easy acceptance. As I see the elderly and bedridden, I pray God give them the gift of patience and acceptance even as I pray for those gifts for myself now and for the future. Do you love me? Do you trust in me? How do I respond to God’s questions of me? -- Deacon Duffey |

PUTTING FAITH INTO ACTION |
“If you want peace, work for justice.” (Pope Paul VI) THIS Tuesday, April 24, hundreds of Catholics will converge on the Capitol in Sacramento to celebrate Mass with Bishop Richard Garcia of Monterey, get updates on legislation, rally at the Capitol, and speak with our state representatives. The issues on the docket are very important to us as people of faith: physician-assisted suicide (again), comprehensive immigration reform, and healthcare reform. Other issues, which may be addressed if time allows, are: expansion of the safe surrender of infants; collection of umbilical cord blood; fetal pain protection; expansion of food stamps; energy assistance for low-income residents; and compassionate release of terminally ill prisoners. The cost of the bus trip, materials and lunch is $20. The bus will leave from St. Robert’s at 6:30 am and should return about 6 pm. Please contact me at ssheral@saintroberts.org or call me at the rectory if you have questions or would like to come. Peace, S. Sheral |

ANNUAL APPEAL |

The Mystery of the Triduum Unfolds During the session on the Eucharist this morning, several people commented on how moved they were by the Passion Play. Thank you again, Ben, Bob and all of our parish youth who brought the gospel to life for us! The young people will remember the words they needed to memorize and, hopefully, the rest of us might remember Jesus’ love for us as well, especially in times when we feel low or of little worth. The passing overhead of the cross always touches me since it requires that we help each other and we all know from experience that we can’t carry our crosses alone. “The Church’s long tradition insists that what happened once in history passes over into the mystery of the assembly’s liturgical/sacramental celebrations. What the paschal triduum actually celebrates is mystery not history. The liturgies celebrate not what once happened to Jesus, but what is now happening among us as people called to conversion, gathered in faith and gifted with the Spirit of holiness. They celebrate God’s taking possession of our hearts at their deepest core, recreating us as a new human community, broken like bread for the world’s life – a community rich in compassion, steadfast in hope, and fearless in the search for justice and peace.” (Taken from “The Three Days of the Pascha,” by Nathan Mitchell, in Assembly, vol. 18.1) We are Easter people; may Alleluia be our song! Peace, S. Sheral |
