HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

The month of May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God, in many cultures. Those of us raised from childhood in the Catholic Church have beautiful memories of Marian customs of our youth, the May Crowning, the May Altars, the May processions etc. Practically, each custom includes the offering of flowers to Our Blessed Mother. This practice goes way back in history to the earliest of times. Actually we could say that we adopted it from the Greeks and Romans and then tailored it to suit our Christian devotions. The month of May was considered the season of new life and growth. Both, the Greek and Roman cultures celebrated by offering the fresh blossoms to their goddesses asking that winter would be expelled and new life would prevail. We, today, offer flowers to Mary the Mother of God, asking her to dispel evil and sorrow from our world and asking her to bless us with new growth in peace and love in our families and communities. Mary, throughout history becomes the role model for the Mothers of each generation. She became in prayerful language “our live, our sweetness and our hope.” Mary taught each generation of mothers the importance of having God-centered priorities-a sound relationship with God, a sound relationship with family and a sound relationship with oneself. We should strive to imitate Our Divine Savior in showing care and concern for our mothers. While dying in pain and agony on the cross Jesus’ last thoughts were for Mary, His Mother. Seeing Mary at the food of the cross he said, “Mother, behold your son”, and to his disciple he said “Behold, your mother.” (John 19:27). Let’s pray for all mothers today and every day.

God Bless you,
Sister Patricia

 Happy Mother’s Day!
Though today is not a liturgical feast, the readings actually deal with some issues which Moms, with some help from the rest of us - Dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers and coaches – need to keep in mind as they interact with children. The first reading raises the question of a traditional practice, circumcision, and whether it is needed for salvation. There is much disagreement and controversy erupts. Does this remind you of what happens when your child’s friend’s parents’ have a different set of household rules than you do? In our modern day, we might ask ourselves, what are the practices which are needed for peaceful daily life in our home? What qualities are absolutely essential in rearing good, sensitive, generous young people? In the gospel, Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to be with us, to teach us everything we need to know. That same Spirit, dwelling within us, will grant us the peace that nothing else can bring us. Do we let our children know that no matter what, God loves them and will help and guide them? When we are disciplining them, can we be sure to make the distinction between what they did which was wrong and who they are which is beloved by us and by God?

Though mothers and grandmothers tend to be the ones who pass on the faith, mightn’t it be time for the rest of us to share in that wonderful responsibility? Do the children see all of us pray before we eat? Does Dad ever ask for prayers for a difficult situation at work? Do the children experience us as adults praying and singing during Mass or do we seem inattentive and bored? Do we say prayers with the children before they go to bed or are we too busy? Do we bless them on the forehead (as the Eucharistic ministers do) praying for a good night’s sleep, free from scary thoughts? Some of our grandmothers and mothers are in heaven already. Have we told the children that they’re still with us, watching over us and asking God to continue to bless us?

I pray constantly for you who are parents since your task is not an easy one! I hope that you can feel those prayers as you try to make life-giving decisions for your children. Place your children in God’s hands since God loves them even more than you do. Ask Mary (and Joseph) to intercede for you. They must also have had times, as ordinary human beings, when they weren’t sure what to say or do in rearing Jesus!

Peace, S. Sheral
