PARISH BULLETIN
May 20, 2007
Seventh Sunday of Easter

Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate the wonderful Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Throughout the Easter season, we have heard the post resurrection stories of the Risen Lord. Christ Jesus appeared numerous times to his disciples after being raised from the dead by the power of God’s Spirit. Christ Jesus wants his disciples to know that he is alive. All that Jesus said before he died has come true. The promises of God have been fulfilled. The Risen Lord continues to teach his disciples the Good News. For fifty days, they have enjoyed being with the good Lord once again. Christ has shared the broken bread of the Eucharist and has broken open the Word of God with his disciples. They know without a doubt now that Christ is risen, that Christ is alive. The disciples are living witnesses of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

It has become clear that the disciples of Jesus have a new purpose in life. All that they have heard from Christ Jesus and all that they have seen him do is to be shared with and handed on to the whole world. Something this good cannot be reserved for oneself. Everyone is to receive the goodness of the Lord. The Word of Life and the Eucharist is meant to be celebrated by a host of nations, by all of God’s people throughout the world and through the ages.

This is why the Lord has to ascend to heaven and be seated at the right hand of the Father. The Holy Spirit, the promised Advocate, will be given to the disciples after the Lord ascends to heaven. The Risen Lord promised his disciples that he would be with them always. The Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of this promise. The Spirit of God will come upon the disciples and will send them forth as fearless Apostles to proclaim the Word of God and to bring the real presence of Christ, the Eucharist, to others. The Apostles will continue the work of God. In proclaiming Christ is risen, the Apostles will build up the Church, the Body of Christ, here on this earth. The Apostles are no longer fishermen, but truly fishers of men. The Word of God is the net that is cast upon the nations of the world to bring them into the Kingdom of God. It is no wonder that the disciples of Jesus returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. As Apostles, the work of God that awaits them will be exciting and challenging and quite promising.

Father Paul

SUMMER HOME RETREAT

Mercy Center is offering a Summer Home Retreat for women and men who are seeking a deeper relationship with God, but whose obligations keep them from going away for a weekend retreat. It is offered from Monday, July 16 to Friday, July 20. You live at home in your usual setting and go through your normal routine – working out an appropriate daily pattern for prayer and reflection and coming to Mercy Center for one hour each day for spiritual direction. The spiritual director helps you to listen to what God is saying in the experiences of your daily life. Your director will call you during the week before the retreat to discuss your expectations, answer your questions and set a time to meet. The only requirement is that you make a commitment to the retreat experience and to the five sessions. I’ve had various spiritual directors over the past 20 years and have found it very helpful to have someone else listen with me for what God may be asking of me at any given time in my life. I have the fliers if you think you might be interested and will gladly answer any questions you may have.

ST. ROBERT'S ANNUAL PARISH FESTIVAL
September 21st, 22nd and 23rd

BBQ AND FOOD BOOTH needs your help. We need 8 to 10 workers in the booths at all times. If you can help to BBQ or serve. We also need strong young people to be our runners for the entire 3 days. Anyone who signs up to be a runner can earn their community service hours. We also need at least 4 people to help prepare the condiments Friday afternoon before the festival begins to slice tomato's, onions, chopping lettuce, boiling hot dogs etc. Please call the Downs family to secure the time slot that you desire.

Today is the Feast of the Ascension, moved by the bishops to Sunday instead of the traditional Thursday so that more people would celebrate it. As a youngster, I thought of this feast in relationship to the Westerns I grew up with: this world was too small for Jesus and the Spirit to be here at the same time, so one of them had to go! Now as an adult, I have a different understanding of why the Spirit couldn’t come until Jesus ascended.  The power of the Spirit with whom they will be baptized will transform them from the frightened followers - one who denied him and the others who ran away - into those who will proclaim boldly the message of Jesus even to their deaths.  After the resurrection, he appears in his glorified body to many of his followers in different situations.  But once the Spirit comes, they will need to rely on God's presence within them to strengthen and guide them and make them into witnesses of his life, death and resurrection.  And that power called the Spirit is now within us, too, through baptism and confirmation.

Mercy Young Adults!
Mercy Center is sponsoring a social from 6 pm to 7:30 pm the first Friday of every month in connection with Taize Prayer immediately following. They are forming a community for people in their 20s and 30s who wish to explore opportunities for Christian service and develop their spirituality within a community of peers. Please contact Sister Patsy Harney at mercyyoungadults@sbcglobal.net
