PARISH BULLETIN
June 3, 2007
Trinity Sunday

Dear Parishioners,

Please join me in congratulating the five adults who received their Confirmation last Sunday at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco. They are:

Deborah Caine, Tonya Katches, Kristin Simpson,
Monica Navarro and Carlos Buenrostro.

This Sunday, June 4th, is the Feast Day of Pope John XXIII.It was an innocent time for me, 1962, but even than I knew that something needed to change in the Church for it to remain vibrant in my life. With Pope John’s invitation and announcement of the 2nd Vatican Council, changes were made and my faith experience was revitalized. It’s hard to imagine one person’s effect on the life of another, but I’m forever grateful for the influence of Pope John XXIII on my life and the life of the church

Shhh, don’t tell. The word is that Sr. Mary O’Donnell is flying to Ireland next Saturday. She will be attending a family wedding. After which she will be remaining in Ireland to enjoy her well deserved retirement close to her family.Sister Mary, in her own way, has declared that she wanted no parish celebration as she has been honored a number of times during the past couple of years. There were, however, many clandestine dinners with priests, CCD teachers, staff and friends in the past couple of weeks.Sr. Mary, our prayers for a safe, healthy and peaceful retirement go with you.You too, have been a wonderful influence on our lives.Don’t tell her I told you.

-Deacon Duffey

FEAST OF THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

“Because we, being many, are one bread, we are one body:
for we all take part in the one bread.” (1 Cor. 10:17)

On this year’s Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, the Catholic Bishops of California have called for statewide recognition and prayerful celebrations of the enduring contribution of the immigrant: new and old, in building up the Body of Christ, the Church.

The Catholic community in this country would not exist were it not for the presence of the immigrant family. Our Church is dependent on the generosity and willingness of all people, and in particular, immigrant persons to become engaged and involved in the Parish life and Church leadership.

The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ celebrates both the Eucharistic Element of the Body of Christ as well as the Church, the Body of Christ in the world. We the Church are the Body of Christ. We believe that when one member of the Body is diminished, the entire Body is diminished: when one member suffers, we all share in that suffering.

Recent I.C.E. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids, arrests and deportations have torn apart families and parish communities. Children are separated from their parents. Husbands and wives are forced into separation and neighborhoods are left in a wake of fear. These I.C.E. raids are the symptom of a failed immigration system and the turmoil and pain of these raids can only be addressed by comprehensive immigration reforms. We must not allow the Body of Christ to be fractured and broken apart due to the lack of comprehensive reform.

From a moral standpoint we cannot remain silent. The Catholic community therefore calls upon our political leaders to put aside partisan politics and to work together to bring about comprehensive immigration reform. We call for a reform that provides a pathway to citizenship for those who are presently working and living in our communities; we call for the reunification of families; we call for a due process for immigrants who apply for a stay of deportation or apply for residency; we call for a future worker system that provides worker protection and a path to citizenship for all future workers and job protection for US workers; and we call for policies that address the root causes of immigration in sending countries.

The following is the way you can participate this recognition and celebration.

We are inviting all ethnic communities within the Archdiocese to participate in a procession on Saturday, June 9th, at 3 pm - starting at Mission Dolores. The procession will make its way to the Cathedral for the 5:30 pm Mass. After Mass, there will be testimonies from immigrants and a call for comprehensive immigration reform.
