PARISH BULLETIN
July 15, 2007
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

This past week we buried two pillars of our community. Since my first days here as a deacon I have known Josie Mercado and Wally Mooney. Josie was one of the founding leaders of our parish Filipino-American group. Josie would often ask for something, and if I showed the slightest hesitation, she would call me several times until she got what she desired. As Fr. Joe mentioned at her funeral homily, Josie was an inspiration to him as they often prayed together and supported each other through the pain of their illnesses. Josie even got the last word as I was leading the gravesite service. As I moved the prayer book from one hand to the other, I was stung by a bee. That’s never happened before. I knew it was Josie telling me to remember who I was praying for and to do it right.

Wally Mooney was a mentor to me through his work with St. Vincent de Paul. The main role of the deacon is to reach out to the poor and needy in the community. Wally in many ways was a better deacon than I am. It was through him that people’s needs for food, clothing and meals were met. He trained many volunteers. He kept the most perfect accounting of services requested and delivered. Imagine receiving phone calls from the needy almost every day for over 16 years. Wally most enjoyed delivering the Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets often wearing a Santa hat.

Both Josie and Wally will be missed. We continue to pray for them and their families. May they rest in peace in the presence of Our Lord.

-Deacon Duffey

WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?

This Sunday’s readings are among the most beautiful in the scriptures. The first one reminds us that God’s commandments aren’t something far away or so complicated that one needs a degree in theology to understand them. God’s wish for our lives is “in our mouths” as we teach our children and grandchildren what is right and “in our hearts” as we do the best we can to live out what we’ve celebrated in the Eucharist. The gospel tells the familiar story of the Good Samaritan and we have been blessed this past week to celebrate the lives and deaths of two parishioners who lived out that parable.

Josie Mercado began the parish Filipino-American group to encourage our Filipino community’s involvement in all parish activities while still maintaining and passing on to their children, the richness of their cultural traditions. Rooted in Christ, she treasured participating in daily Mass and being a Eucharistic minister. She was the most active member of the Social Concerns group, eliciting input from more parishioners than any of the rest of us. She cared about rides for the seniors, opportunities for the youth, and reaching out to anyone in need. Though her health was poor, it never erased the smile from her face. Wally Mooney, the president of our St. Vincent de Paul for 16 years, put his love and organizational abilities into wonderful service for our area’s poor. He never tired of responding to the many calls for help, though he was slowing down himself. It wasn’t an obligation for him, it was a heartfelt service of those Jesus loved. There was no judgment of why a family had fallen on hard times, just a prompt meeting of their needs. How blest we are to have seen in these two the living out of this parable! May each of us hear Jesus’ words addressed to us, “Go and do likewise.”

Peace, S. Sheral
