Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners:

One of my main concerns is the number of Catholics who do not have an adequate understanding of the reason we celebrate the Lord’s Day by attending Mass. This is not just a problem locally but throughout the world. On the local level, it is one of my main concerns in that the children of our Parish, both from the school and the Religious Education program, are not receiving good example in regard to Mass attendance from their families.

During the summer, Pope John Paul II issued a letter addressed to all Catholics addressing this very topic. During the coming weeks, I will give quotes from the letter which might be a help to you and to your family.

The Lord’s Day - as Sunday was called from apostolic times - has always been accorded special attention in the history of the church because of its close connection with the very core of the Christian mystery. In fact, in the weekly reckoning of time Sunday recalls the day of Christ’s resurrection. It is Easter which returns week by week, celebrating Christ’s victory over sin and death, the fulfillment in him of the first creation and the dawn of "the new creation". It is the day which recalls in grateful adoration the world’s first day and looks forward in active hope to "the last day", when Christ wil come in glory and all things will be made new.

Rightly, then the psalmist’s cry is applied to Sunday: "This is the day which the Lord has made: Let us rejoice and be glad in it". This invitation to joy, which the Easter liturgy makes its own, reflects the astonishment which came over the women who, having seen the crucifixion of Christ, found the tomb empty when they went there "very early on the first day after the Sabbath". It is an invitation to relive in some way the experience of the two disciples of Emmaus, who felt their hearts "burn within them" as the risen one walked with them on the road, explaining the Scriptures and revealing himself in "the breaking of the bread". And it echoes the joy - at first uncertain and then overwhelming - which the apostles experienced on the evening of that same day when they were visited by the risen Jesus and received the gift of his peace and of his Spirit.

The resurrection of Jesus is the fundamental event upon which Christian faith rests. It is an astonishing reality, fully grasped in the light of faith yet historically attested to by those who were privileged to see the risen Lord. It is a wondrous event which is not only absolutely unique in human history, but which lies at the very heart of the mystery of time. In fact, "all time belongs to Christ and all the ages", as the evocative liturgy of the Easter Vigil recalls in preparing the paschal candle. Therefore, in commemorating the day of Christ’s resurrection not just once a year but every Sunday, the church seeks to indicate to every generation the true fulcrum of history, to which the mystery of the world’s origin and its final destiny leads.

Sincerely,
Father Vincent Ring

MASS MUSINGS

In 1978, the U.S. Bishop’s Committee on the Liturgy wrote a set of guidelines for the use of the arts in public worship entitled Environment and Art in Catholic Worship. In it they wrote, "The experience of mystery which liturgy offers is found in its God-consciousness and God-centeredness. . . . A simple and attractive beauty in everything that is used or done in liturgy is the most effective invitation to this kind of experience." (n.12) May we find that "simple and attractive beauty" in our stained-glass windows and be drawn ever deeper into the mystery of God at every Eucharist.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held in the Chapel, following the 8:30 AM Mass on Saturday, September 5th. "Come to Me you who are heavily burdened. I will refresh you." Adoration will close at 10:00 AM.

THANK YOU

to all of our friends and family for your prayers, love and support during Russell’s operation. He is doing very well now. Love from the Christenson’s.

RENEW 2000 COME AND SEE

How might we rediscover God in our lives? Like the saints and mystics, we do not discover God so much by shutting ourselves away or merely reading about how to become holy. Rather we find God in our everyday lives, in our everyday experiences. If you would like to be trained as a facilitator or open up your home for the 6 week meetings, please call the Rectory Office at 589-2800. Join RENEW in the Fall.

RENEW 2000 EVENING OF REFLECTION

Thursday, Sept. 10th at 7p.m. This will be an evening of beautiful prayer, faith sharing, intercession, food and fun to begin preparation for the Great Jubilee in the year 2000. Plan to attend!! Questions call Pat Kelly at 589-2800.

RCIA CLASS TO BEGIN

RCIA Classes for those adults wishing to understand more about their faith or to prepare for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation or First Eucharist will begin on Sept. 17th at 7 PM in the Convent Chapel. Our first meeting will be an OPEN HOUSE. We invite all former members to come and renew friendships and to share your stories with the new members. Families and Sponsors are welcome.

"HE WHO GIVES TO THE POOR SUFFERS NO WANT."
Proverb 28:27

Your donations of non-perishable foods to the St. Vincent de Paul Society here at St. Robert’s are given to local needy people. We receive our monetary income from the 2nd collection every 5th Sunday. Money is used to help people in an emergency - getting sick, losing a job or being in an accident. We write a monthly check to our Council in San Mateo for help in prison ministry and the soup kitchen located on Grand Ave. in SSF.

We appreciate your continued assistance and we thank you for your donations of money and canned goods. A 10 year old summed up your generosity when we helped out his family. He commented, "This is a dream come true".

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED

We need drivers to rotate once a month for delivery of the Aids Lunches from St. Robert’s to the Clinic in San Mateo (near Hillsdale Shopping Center). Lunches are delivered the 2nd Wed. of each month between 9:30 and 11 AM. Please call Deacon Duffey if you can drive. As always everyone’s help is greatly appreciated.
