Dear Parishioners,

Wednesday last was Valentine’s Day, an occasion that inspired the celebration of love for family and good friends. In today’s gospel the voice of Jesus issues a strong call to each of us to engage in a different kind of love. He asks us to love our enemy, return good for evil, to live as he did, not to judge nor condemn. This is a tough teaching and one that is difficult to live by.

Recently I came upon a short poem that may help:

I had a dream the other night
With heaven as its theme.
I saw God in this land of light
And was astonished with the scene.
I saw some folks whom I had judged
And others I condemned.
And had to face the bitter truth
That I was not perfect in the end.

Soon it will be the Lenten Season. As we prepare let us try each day to practice being more loving, forgiving, giving, less condemning and less judgmental.

Sister Mary

NEW MINISTRY: WELCOMING RETURNING CATHOLICS

The Archdiocese is offering training for people interested in the ministry to returning Catholics. If this is a ministry that might appeal to you please contact me and we can attend the training together. The training sessions are scheduled between Friday, March 2nd, and Saturday, March 10th. Each person is expected to attend about 7-8 hours of training. Please leave a message for me at the parish rectory including your name and evening phone number and I will try to contact you next week. We need to register by Monday, February 26th. This is one of the programs subsidized by the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal.
Deacon Rusty Duffey

"Communion and Community: Starting the Day with the Lord"

I asked a member of our community who attends weekday Mass in the morning on a daily basis to share with us some thoughts about it:

On Ash Wednesday, February 28th, we invite you to attend either 6:30am, 8:30am, 10:30am, or 6:30pm Mass here at St. Robert’s and to continue attending daily Mass all through the forty days of Lent. . . . Many have been attending daily 6:30am Mass [and 8:30am Mass] for over ten years now. Some of them work and some are retired but all have a love for the Eucharist and a love for starting the day with a committed, faith-filled community. After Mass, they take the word of the gospel and meld it into their daily activities through acts of charity and kindness. As Carol Luebering stated in Catholic Update, "Communion and community are two words with one root — two words for one reality: people who love and support one another."

If you are one of the hundreds (thousands?) of caring and generous people at St. Robert’s, but are feeling a little bit tapped out or overburdened, see what power and peace there are in the celebration of the Word and Eucharist during Lent. - Pat Kelly

ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL

If you did not receive the Appeal envelope in the mail, you may pick one up at the pamphlet rack in the vestibule of the Church or call the Rectory at 589-2800.

PASSION PLAY

We are looking for teen actors, singers and musicians for this year’s Passion Play. The Passion Play is an annual celebration of Jesus’ life on Good Friday night. There will be a meeting in late February for those who are interested. If you wish to join the fun, call Ben Baldonado. We are also looking for adult singers and musicians. There will be minimum practice time for the adults. Ben Baldonado.

PREPARE FOR LENT

The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 28th. As it approaches, keep these things in mind to aid your prayer, fasting, and almsgiving:

  • Sales of the Good News Bible and the New American Bible will begin Sunday, Feb. 25th. If you don’t have a Bible in your home, plan to pick up one of these. They are attractive, durable, and affordable.

  • "Operation Rice Bowl", a Lenten almsgiving for the poor of the world, will begin soon. Pick up a collection box in church on Sunday, Feb. 25th.

  • Stations of the Cross, followed by a Simple Meal will be offered every Friday of Lent beginning March 2. Plan to attend!
