Third Sunday of Lent

but_pacm.gif (4092 bytes)

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we have the Gospel of "Second-hand Rose". Is it any wonder that she got the attention of the men in town when she told them Jesus told her everything she had ever done? What is it like to have no secrets left? Humiliating? Briefly, perhaps. But she doesn’t sound humiliated. She sounds liberated. The liberty that comes from living in the truth. Stepping into the shower of God’s grace that sends us out refreshed and ready to try again. To live again. It may take your breath away for a moment, but then you feel re-born.

Easter’s coming. Give yourself the gift of a good confession. Saturdays: 3:30 - 4:15 p.m. Or the Communal Penance Service 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23rd, or, 7:30-9 p.m Monday, March 25th, here at Saint Robert’s. Or if you work in The City, check out the schedules at Old St. Mary’s, Notre Dame de Victoires, St. Patrick’s on Mission Street, or S.I. Be refreshed. Live again. In Him.

Father Morris

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
FRIDAY LENTEN SUPPERS

Each Friday during Lent (except Good Friday), you are invited to participate in the three Lenten disciplines: PRAYER, FASTING, ALMSGIVING. Stations of the Cross are held in our Church at 6:00 pm, followed by a light Lenten Supper in Hennessy Hall. In response to the invitation of Jesus:

"I HAVE CALLED YOU BY NAME",

you might want to consider attending Stations. The Supper on March 8th will be hosted by St. Robert’s Men’s Club and the Sociables. We ask that you put the amount you would have spent on Friday evening’s meal in the basket provided by our St. Vincent de Paul Society. They will use your donation to help our sisters and brothers who are hungry. If you are new to the Parish, this is a chance to meet other members of our Parish family. All are welcome.

"I Have Called You By Name"

A verse from the song, "You Have Called Us" by Bernadette Farrell says,

You will lead us to your light,
Walk before us through the night.
You will guide us on our journey.
You will keep our vision bright.

In the RCIA process, Lent goes by a much longer name, and it’s related to that verse quoted above. For the Elect and Candidates preparing for initiation at Eastertime, we call Lent "The Period of Purification and Enlightenment." Actually, that’s not a bad way for all church members to look at Lent—a time of purification and enlightenment.

Part of the official instruction for the RCIA tells us, "This is a period of more intense spiritual preparation, . . . and is intended to purify the minds and hearts of the elect as they search their own consciences and do penance. This period is intended as well to enlighten the minds and hearts of the elect with a deeper knowledge of Christ the Savior." (RCIA, no. 139.)

For the next three Sundays of Lent, including today, we will celebrate particular rituals with the Elect and Candidates called "Scrutinies." The scrutinies are rites "for self-searching and repentance." They are meant "to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good." (RCIA, no. 141.) Actually, they can reveal, heal, and strengthen the hearts of all celebrating the Scrutinies with them. That’s what we mean when we say we journey with the Elect and Candidates to Easter. LENTEN ANOINTING MASS:
Jesus says to us:
I HAVE CALLED YOU BY NAME

Heal the Sick!" Jesus has charged His Church to take care of those who are ill by accompanying them with her prayer of intercession in His Name. The Sacrament of the Sick is for anyone who begins to be in danger of death from illness or the aging process. Graces derived from this Sacrament are: strength, peace and the courage to overcome the difficulties of serious illness, pain, or the frailty of advanced years. We become more closely united with the suffering of Christ, who says to us: I HAVE CALLED YOU BY NAME! St. Robert’s Lenten Anointing Mass will take place at NOON, SUNDAY, MARCH 10th.

YOUR EMERGENCY PRAYER NETWORK IS HERE

The "Emergency Prayer Network" will pray for your specific intentions whenever some crisis arises in your life. If you call, our group will pray fervently for three days for you and your special intention. Call Michele Pipinich. Let us know how things turn out so that we can praise God for His faithfulness.

Human Cloning-Some people want to use cloning to produce live-born children who are "copies" of living or deceased people. Others would use it to mass-produce human embryos to be destroyed in medical research. The Human Cloning Prohibition Act (S. 1899, H.R. 2505) will ban human cloning for either purposes. The U.S. House of Representatives has already passed H.R. 2505. That measure or its Senate companion, S. 1899, awaits a Senate vote. President Bush says he will sign the Act into law. Please write to Senator Feinstein and Boxer to support this legislation. For more information consult. U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on cloning: www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/bioethic.
