PARISH BULLETIN

Fifth Sunday of Lent

but_pacm.gif (4092 bytes)

Dear Parishioners:

I've had the chance over the last couple of Sundays to help prepare and to celebrate the rites of the Scrutinies with the Elect and candidates of the R.C.I.A. For the last few weeks they have reflected in advance on scripture readings from our Sunday liturgies and then answered questions like, "What are we thirsting for? What makes our world dry and barren? What sins blind us? How do we hope God will enlighten those who are in darkness?" The realities of the war in Iraq, terrorism, and hatred in the world are very present in their answers, as is their evident faith in God. Let's continue to pray with these men and women preparing to be received fully into the Church that their new lives in Christ will renew ours.

On a different note, I want to let you know that I am resigning my position as pastoral associate for liturgy at St. Robert's effective May 31st. I'm planning to take the Summer off with Theresa, my wife, and then to move into some new job yet to be determined. I am also happily hoping to remain a parishioner at St. Robert's unless the job market pushes me into a position at another parish. I hope it's not too early to say "thank you!" for the many moments of conversation, work, play, and prayer that I as a staff member have enjoyed with you. Be assured that arrangements are already being made for creative and capable people to pick up where I leave off. Fr. Ring will keep you informed in upcoming months about new staff appointments.

Pat Vallez-Kelly

CANDLE OF REMEMBRANCE FOR ACTIVE DUTY PERSONNEL

Have you noticed in the Church, on the right side of the altar, a single white candle? This candle was lit on the first day of the war to honor and remember all those known to St. Robert's parishioners and those from San Bruno who are on active duty. Next to the candle is a book for you to include the names of people you know who are serving their country. We hope everyone will pray for their safe and speedy return.

Prayer for the Men and Women in the Armed Services

Heavenly Father,

Bless and protect all who serve the cause of peace. Bring them home safely to their loved ones. Bless with compassion and love all the victims of war. Receive into your loving arms all who have died. Console and comfort their families.

Holy Spirit,

Enlighten the minds of all world leaders. Direct them toward an end to all hatred, violence, terrorism and war. Grant us a world with a just and lasting peace.

With Confidence and Faith, we pray through Christ, Our Lord. Amen

ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL

The annual budget for the services and programs of the Archdiocese is over $10 million. Over half of this amount comes from the Annual Appeal. Each parish of the Archdiocese is assessed a fair share based upon the income and size of the parish. The goal for St. Robert's Parish is $80,200. We are responsible for the full amount so, if we fall short, it will be necessary for us to make up the amount from the regular collections of the Parish. The services and programs provided by the Archdiocese, from the weekly newspaper to support for the training of future priests, are extremely helpful to our Parish. I ask you to please help us in reaching the goal. Whether you can donate a small amount or large, it will show that you are committed to St. Robert's and to the Church of the San Francisco Archdiocese. Join the 258 families who have already given and help us to reach our goal.

Goal is $80,200

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND LENTEN SUPPERS

You are invited to participate in the three Lenten disciplines: PRAYER-FASTING-ALMSGIVING, each Friday evening during Lent (except for Good Friday). Stations take place in the Church at 6:00 p.m., followed by a light Lenten supper in Hennessy Hall. The supper on April 11th will be hosted by Children's Liturgy and RCIA. We ask that you donate what you would have spent on Friday dinner to our St. Vincent de Paul Society, who will use it to help our sisters and brothers in need. A box for your donation will be on the serving table. If you are new to the Parish, this is a good way to meet and visit with other members of our faith Community.

LENTEN COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICES
Saturday, April 12th, 3:00pm
Monday, April 14th, 7:30pm

There is a community feeling about parish Lenten Reconciliation services - the wonderful sense of being with others who share the same faith and values. The format is liturgical: readings from Scripture, Priest's homily, examination of conscience, saying together "The Lord's Prayer". Then those who wish to confess their sins go to the Priest of their choice and mention a particular sin or sinful attitude for which they are sorry. The Priest will give them a penance and absolution for their sins. Christ is the One who forgives our sins, speaking through the Priest. Through this Sacrament, we are reconciled with our God and with one another. Jesus gives us His loving assurance of forgiveness. All we need is sorrow. He will do the rest. Come! Receive inner peace and reconciliation with our loving Lord, who continues to

RENEW US IN THE LIGHT OF FAITH!

PALM SUNDAY PROCESSION WITH ST. ANDREW'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
NEXT SUNDAY, APRIL 13TH, 9:00AM IN SAN BRUNO PARK

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, a.k.a. Passion Sunday, and we have made plans for a special Palm Sunday gathering in San Bruno Park at 9:00am, before the 9:30am Mass, with the members of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. At the invitation of the pastor of St. Andrew's, Rev. Karen Swanson, our two communities will celebrate the Blessing of the Palms in the park, join in a common procession, and then eventually split to our churches for our own liturgies. At the time of the printing of this bulletin, we are still finalizing our plans, so I can not yet tell you exactly where the meeting place is in the park. I apologize!! There will be many flyers in church this weekend giving the exact time and location for our Palm Sunday gathering in the park. I hope you will join in this unique opportunity for us to meet and to pray with our Christian sisters and brothers from St. Andrew's next week. We have also invited them to join us in our Silent Prayer Walk at 6:30am on Good Friday morning. Pat Vallez-K.elly
