The Vocation Crunch

With Fr. Tom being made pastor, all of us are wondering if we'll get a new Associate Pastor. As Fr. Ring has said, the archdiocese is short 10 priests to replace all the priests who've been made pastor or moved to other parishes. I realize that St. Robert's has had priests come from its families, but that was decades ago. As a former Vocation Director for my community and for the Archdiocese, I can't help but make a connection between everyone's desire for more priests (and religious, I presume) and what we are or are not doing about it. As I've said to a few of you, "Everyone wants priests, but no one wants their son or daughter, niece or nephew or grandchild to be one!" We folk don't drop from the sky; we come from families just like yours and parishes just like this. No one can give another person a vocation and we don't want to return to the days of many Irish families where there was an expectation that at least one child would go into the seminary or convent. But we do need to start saying to the young people we know and love, "You'd make a great priest or sister or brother."

You know what kind of person you'd want to serve you as a priest, (brother, sister, deacon, committed lay minister): someone who has a deep relationship with God and can lead others closer to God; someone who relates well with all sorts of people; someone with leadership skills who can collaborate with others in guiding the parish (school, social service agency, etc.); someone with a strong enough sense of self to live a celibate lifestyle in a healthy way. Obviously, the vocation to become a deacon or a committed lay minister doesn't involve the giving up of spouse and children and therefore, might attract more people. But I can't believe that God has quit calling people to serve as priests, brothers and sisters. We do need to pray, as we have been, but we also need to "pop the question."

Most of us have someone in our families who has experienced divorce, yet we don't discourage those we love from seriously considering marriage. The reports of clergy sexual abuse have shocked and embarrassed us and have reminded us of the humanity of all members of the Church, bishops and priests included. Some of us have had the experience of the priest who married us leaving to marry as well. And all of us know good priests who have literally laid down their lives for us and for other people whom they've served. Let us encourage the young adults among us to consider all the ways they could change the world through serving in a Church ministry.

Peace, Sr. Sheral

NEW PASTOR AND NEW ASSOCIATE PASTOR ASSIGNED TO ST. ROBERT'S

We are happy to announce that the Archbishop has assigned two priests to St. Robert's. Monsignor Bruce Dreier has been appointed pastor. Fr. Joseph Healy has been appointed Parochial Vicar. Their assignments begin on July 1, 2004. Both priests are known to the parish staff and have a great reputation. We are truly blessed by their assignment here.

We welcome them!

YOUR EMERGENCY PRAYER NETWORK IS HERE

The "Emergency Prayer Network" will pray for your specific intentions whenever some crisis arises in your life. If you call, our group will pray fervently for three days for you and your special intention. Call Michele Pipinich. Let us know how things turn out so that we can praise God for His faithfulness.

God Bless You!

Fr. Vincent Ring has served as pastor here for 14 years building up the parish community and the parish plant as well. As you know, he will be leaving for St. Denis Parish in Menlo Park around July 1st.

Fr. Tom Hamilton is also leaving our parish. He has served here as Associate pastor for two years and has shared with us some of the traditions from the Byzantine rite of the church as well as his love for liturgy and singing. He will be appointed pastor of St. Anthony's Parish, Novato effective July 1.

We will have the opportunity to express our gratitude to both of these fine priests and wish them well at a reception in Hennessy Hall after all the Masses the weekend of June 26th and June 27th. There will be scrap book tables available for both Father Tom and Father Hamilton.

Bring your memories!

SAINT ROBERT'S CHURCH LIBRARY

Spiritual Reading is available at Saint Robert's every other Sunday morning after the Masses in the vestibule of the church. Please, take a few minutes and check out an interesting book for summer reading.
