PARISH BULLETIN

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

Each day I thank God for my fourteen years as Pastor of St. Robert's Parish. You, the parishioners, have been my pride and my joy. Trusting in God, we went through difficult times and great times. We did it together as a Parish family. Despite all this, I know that it is a good time for me to move on. It will be good for me to be in a position with less administration, and, therefore, less stress. But it will also give me more time, I hope, for prayer, study and ministry. I also believe that it is good for St. Robert's to have a new pastor who will bring fresh insights, great energy and the ability to reach out to more people of the parish. I am very happy with the assignment of both Monsignor Dreier and Father Healy. I know you will be happy with them as well.

My thanks go to the priests, deacons, sisters, educators and staff who have in many ways made my years as pastor such a joy and have made up for my deficiencies. My thanks go also to all parishioners who have given so much of their time, talent and treasure to make St. Robert's a truly great Parish. May God bless all of you.

My greatest regret is that I was not able to inspire more young families realize the importance of coming to Mass each week. I know that this is not just a St. Robert's phenomenon, but it is one that I hoped we could reverse at St. Robert's. It was not to be. Sports, weekend trips, shopping or just plain "sleeping in" have, for some, become the top Sunday priority. I believe that the next generation is being short changed. I also must learn to place more trust in the Holy Spirit.

Please remember me in your prayers and assured of mine.

Sincerely,
Father Ring

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

On Saturday, July 3rd, and on each First Saturday of every month, we are privileged to celebrate Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, following the 8:30 am Mass and continuing until 10:00 am. Jesus wants each of us to have a personal, loving relationship with Him. What a better way than to spend a short time with Him in the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of our church. Come, Jesus is waiting!

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A EUCHARISTIC MINISTER

If you are interesed in becoming a member of this ministry, please call Gene May. We are in need especially of Eucharistic Ministers at the 4:30 p.m. Saturday Mass and at the 5:00 p.m. Sunday Mass, but you are welcome to serve at any of the other Masses.

Where I've Been
I had the opportunity last week to spend five days on retreat at Mercy Center. What a wonderful, grace-filled place! There is a rose garden behind the Kohl mansion with roses of every size and fragrance. The Creator's love of design and gentle shading was more than evident there. Behind the main building is a Zen garden, designed by Fr. Thomas Hand, SJ who for years has shared his knowledge and insights into the richness of the Eastern religious traditions during East/West dialogues each summer. The garden consists of small plants, Bonzai trees, and rocks and pebbles raked into circular patterns. Hearing the cooks washing dishes upstairs after a meal somehow adds to the sense of quiet in the midst of everyday tasks. The labyrinth, a medieval pattern for circular walking to a center point, is located in the midst of ancient Oaks, gladiolas, lilies, lavender, hydrangeas, lobelia, and roses. These three spots were my holy places for prayer since I found the chapel stuffy and overly heated.

We're having our parish Women's Retreat at Mercy Center November 13, so many of you will have chance to experience these blessed places then. If anyone would like to go earlier, just let me know and I'll happily go with you sometime this summer so you can see what I'm writing about. You are welcome to come any time for a day of quiet; you can bring a lunch or purchase the lunch they have available for $8.75. It couldn't be closer to St. Robert's and yet it feels so far from the busyness of everyday life.

The four days previous, I had spent with our Sisters in Denver at their annual province gathering. Four of the Sisters there are Lakota Sioux from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota where they were educated by our sisters in the mission school. Each of them has grappled with reclaiming the heritage which was taken from her by force in the misguided efforts of those times to Christianize and Americanize these young children. They shared the story of Black Elk, one of their holy men who had several visions in his life and managed somehow back then (he was baptized in 1904) to integrate in himself his Lakota spirituality and his Catholic beliefs. He was a catechist for years, revered for the depth of his faith and his practice and, at the same time, he continued to be a leader in the Lakota expressions of prayer.

The Lakota have a lovely phrase, Mitakuye Oyasin which means "all my relatives." They use this phrase in relation to four-legged creatures, two-leggeds and winged beings. It's not, as we might think, a form of pantheism, but rather a recognition of the one Creator, "the Great Spirit" in Lakota terms. How differently we would live if we saw every human being and every created thing as a relative! What respect we would show each other, the animals and all of nature. A particularly helpful thought for the beautiful days of summer when we might tend towards a more reflective attitude.
