PARISH BULLETIN
November 27, 2005
First Sunday of Advent

Dear St. Roberts Parishioners;

My name is Sister Consilio. I am a Presentation Sister and I live in Long Beach, MS where Hurricane Katrina devastated and destroyed this whole area. Even though we stayed here during the hurricane, our house, thank God, suffered only minor damages compared to others who lost everything. In this way we were able to give shelter to ten people at one time who lost their homes.

I want to thank you most sincerely for the generous donation of $9,000 from your parish which was sent to me today by your wonderful parishioner Rob Aveson.

As you know, he spent a week here helping to remodel a skating rink into classrooms and an area to gather for church. We lost everything to Katrina; church, school, parish life center and rectory. In fact the whole neighborhood is gone and people are living in tents and trailers. It will take years to rebuild.

Thanks to the great people who responded so generously. The gift cards that Rob sent will be divided between St. John’s parish in Gulfport and St. Thomas parish here in Long Beach. We will use these cards wisely to help those who are most in need.

May God bless you and all at St. Roberts Parish. When I visit with Sister Mary and the Sisters there in San Bruno I hope to meet you and thank you personally.

Peace and Blessings,
Sincerely in Christ
Sister Consilio Buckely, PBVM

We introduced the idea to our parish finance council and school board during these past two weeks. Already three families have registered. For full information go to www.saintroberts.org and click on the e-contributions line. The first page explains the details. There is a button to take you to the e-paluch registration page. You can register online using either your checking account or credit card. There is no cost to you for this service.

GIFTS FOR THE HOMEBOUND

As we have done for many years, we ask that each of us remember with love those members of our Parish family who are confined to their homes or to nursing homes because of illness or advanced years. We can open our hearts to them by bringing an unwrapped Christmas gift to the baskets placed on our altar steps. Some suggestions are: lap blanket, robes, slippers, dusters, sweaters, nightgowns and pajamas, knee socks or a note telling them that we pray for them and love them.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS

In a society as competitive as ours, we want to be sure our children and grandchildren learn to play for the fun of it. If you haven’t bought your Christmas gifts yet, you might want to think about getting gifts which encourage group work and creativity. As we realize, small children need only an empty box or a piece of paper to create a fantasy world. Children a bit older can discover abilities they don’t know they have if we give them presents which stretch their imaginations. Anything which actively engages them – crafts, fascinating books, puzzles, a science set, sports equipment – is an encouragement for further learning and growth.

GIVING TREE

During the season of Advent we will be having our Christmas “GIVING TREE.” Please help yourself to one of the paper ornaments with a gift suggestion. After you purchase the item, return it unwrapped and place it in the box next to the tree. Please turn in all gifts before Dec. 18th so that we can deliver them in time for Christmas.

Once again thank you for your generosity and for taking the time to help those who would otherwise not have much of a Christmas.

The Children’s Liturgy Team

ADOPT-A-FAMILY

Once again this Christmas Season, we as a parish family will have an ADOPT-A-FAMILY GIVING TREE. There are many people in San Mateo County who don’t have the means to celebrate Christmas as they might like. Additionally this year, we will have some ornaments designated for families affected by Hurricane Katrina from our Adopted Parishes in Gulfport, Mississippi.

At the same time, many in our parish can celebrate with their families and share with those in need. An ADOPT-A-FAMILY program is a way to do this.

On the weekends of November “26th -27th”
and December “3rd-4th”

we will have a “Giving Tree” set up in front of church after all the Masses. This tree will be “decorated” with paper ornaments containing a profile of a family you might be able to help.

If you have the means to share your Christmas spirit, stop by and pick an ornament. Gifts or Scrip will be collected after masses the weekend of December 10th 11th and Dec. 17th 18th.

If you have any questions, please call: Rob and Cathy Aveson or John and Eileen Grealish

Thank you

THANK YOU FROM ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Our Conferences, St. Robert’s and St. Bruno’s of St. Vincent de Paul want to thank all parishioners, as well as all our students at St. Roberts School that donated so much food. It was delivered on Saturday, November 19th, to over 60 families in San Bruno.

I cannot thank enough, Bruce Chester of St. Robert’s and Mary Pleas of St. Bruno’s for all their preparation of “stacking” cans and cans of food and making bags for all the families on our Thanksgiving Lists. Thank you to Gene and Fran Wheeler for the never ending supply of bags.

We had even more volunteers than expected, with Bunny Moniz, John and Ruby Valdez as well as Barbara Tursi and Candi Whooley volunteering to help the teams. We want to thank Bill Root and Frances Gilfillan, Carlo and Marie Noce with Elisa Alverez and Pat Davini, Nancy McMahon and Liz Cesca, Tim and Joan King with Maria Canjuru, Mary Pleas and Zenalda Brion, Josephina Palafax and Lourdes and Matatquin and Gerry and Carmen Huddleston.

After the 8:30 a.m. Mass, and after enjoying our morning coffee, furnished by Carlo and Mare Noce, as well as on-fattening doughnuts and doughnut holes, in the priests rectory kitchen, 150 bags of canned food was distributed in all San Bruno within 2 hours. The number of people served were 139!

We will now take a deep breath...restack our food closet ...and with gift certificates, as well as many Christmas gifts furnished again by parishioners and our “In-Betweeners Group” will get set for our Christmas delivery on Saturday, December 17th.

Thanks to all,
Wally Mooney,
St. Vincent de Paul
President, St. Roberts Chapter

As a Parish Community

We pray.....We pray for the people of God. During this season of Advent, may we watch and wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

WE CONGRATULATE THE NEWLY BAPTIZED

Caitlyn Charito Manahan,
Sophia Rose and Eliana Rae Gianinno

Our sincere sympathy to the families of
Bob Fitzgerald,
Beverly Ryan and
Erma Penna

who died recently.

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

This week we ask you to pray for
Tom O’Brien

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

As we do on the 1st Saturday of each month, we will celebrate Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, on Saturday, December 3rd, following the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Adoration will conclude with Benedictin at 10 :00 a.m. This is a golden opportunity to watch and wait with Jesus as we experience His peace, joy and love.

AIDS LUNCH
December 14th

We are scheduled for the 2nd Wednesday of each month. If you can prepare a favorite cookie, snack or lunch item for 10 to 12 people, please drop it off at the Children's Chapel, in the back of Church, by 9 a.m. on December 14th. Please pack the items in a non-returnable container. Frozen items are ok!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

This weekend of Thanksgiving joy and gratitude finds us listening to readings asking God to save us from the sin and evil which our wandering away from him has brought. The 25th anniversary of the martyrdom of the six Jesuits and their housekeeper and her daughter in El Salvador was ten days ago; Dec. 2 is the anniversary for the four North American women also martyred: Ita Ford, Maura Clarke, Jean Donovan and Dorothy Kazel. Jon Sobrino, SJ, who should have died with the other Jesuits if he’d been home, offers these words on hope: “It seems that everything is against hope, but for me at least, where I see there has been great love, I see hope being born again…It is simply true: love produces hope, and great love produces great hope. The history of sin and grace continues, the history of the poor goes on and so does the history of God.” The Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador, p. 56

Advent Wreath Prayer

Saturday night or Sunday, light two purple candles (going in clockwise direction) on your Advent wreath and pray:

Dear Lord,
Your love for us is as constant as these branches which stay green through every season. As a farmer longs for the harvest, so we are eager for your coming. Open us and the world to your gift of peace that we may bear fruit in works of justice. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

ADVENT MEDITATION WALK WITH MARY TOWARD CHRISTMAS

I would like to invite anyone interested to a small faith-sharing group as we walk with Mary toward Christmas. We will focus on the following meditations:

The Annunciation
The Visitation
The Birth of the Lord
The Presentation of Jesus
     in the temple
Tuesday, December 6th
Tuesday, December 13th
Tuesday, December 20th

Tuesday, January 10th

The meetings will be held in the Convent Chapel, the side entrance at 349 Oak Ave, beginning at 7pm. We would love to have you join us for one or all of the sessions. Please call Deacon Rusty Duffey, 589-2800, if you have any questions.

Saint Roberts Church Library

Spiritual Reading will be available at St. Robert’s after the Masses on Sundays. Please, take a few minutes either before or after Mass and check out a book or two that interest you. You may keep the books until you have them read. We have some books on the Library cart but we have many more in the Library/Reconciliation room.

Enjoy Reading
